Landscape of Mood: Nikolay Dubovskoy

Nikolay Dubovskoy was a Russian landscape painter who lived from 1859 - 1918. He was associated with the Peredvizhniki, known in English as ‘The Itinerants’ or ‘The Wanderers’.

They painted an array of everyday topics but had a deep affinity for Russian landscapes setting out to capture and share in its beauty.

He helped create what became known as the "Landscape of Mood" alongside fellow artist Isaac Levitan.

The paintings celebrate the landscape and countryside in a distinctly Russian way with the images becoming symbols of pride in the nation presented through an ostensibly realistic presentation that has something of a hyperrealistic feel.
